CLUB HISTORY
(CLUB REGISTRATION NO. 25561)
Rotary Club of Dhakuria received its charter from the Rotary International on September 17, 1988 in a grand charter presentation ceremony held at the Calcutta Club with 36 members. The club was sponsored by RC South Calcutta during the Presidentship of Rtn. Sudhin Mitra and PP Rtn. D.K. Ray was the GSR.
PDG K.K. Navada had been a guest source of inspiration and PDG Rtn. Moti C. Tandon was instrumental in getting the charter from the R.I. It should also be put on records the untiring efforts put in by our charter President Rtn. Dhiresh C. Chakrabarty, PP Rtn. T.K. Ghosh and the DCH extension PP. Rtn. S.K. Roy Moulick to get the new members. Although the club was chartered during the Governorship of Late PDG Rtn. Moti C. Tandon the charter presentation ceremony took place on September 17, 1988 and PDG Rtn. Shyamal Dutta handed over the charter to the club. Our District was then R.I. Dist 3290, which included the President of Dist 3240 in it. The members consisted mostly of professionals residing within the territory of the club i.e. Dhakuria.

The club started its meetings at the Calcutta Club. Attendance was good and there was an excellent fellowship. The only emphasis was on Club service and meetings were well organised with good speakers from the District. Fellowship get-togethers were organised on three occasions. Membership strength remained at 34.

“Only a few weeks ago, the concept of Rotary in the USSR was unthinkable. Now it is a reality, and I ask you to look upon the Rotarians of that nation as you would look upon a Rotarian from any of the other ... nations in which Rotary lives. They need us. We need them.”
— 1990 RI Convention

The membership strength went down to 14 as a lot of members left the club due to some reason or the other. Members tried their best to get new members. However the club in spite of low membership strength did excellent work in all four avenues of service. The R.C.C. at village Chiari was adopted. Two deep tube-wells in collaboration with RC Belur were also installed in the village. Several joint meetings and good programmes were organised at the club venue.

“What makes us Rotarians is our belief that our professions are more than just a source of income or a forum for personal achievement. It is seeing them as an unrivaled opportunity for service.”

The membership of the club again went up to 38 with a major drive for growth during the year. The club did excellent work in all four avenues of service. R.C.C. Chiari also did good work with bio-fertilisers given by the club and low-cost latrines. The Lake won best bulletin award in the District. The club won four District awards and the R.I. President’s citation.
